Abstract: Technological breakthroughs like genome sequencing have revolutionized our ability to investigate the molecular basis of life. Having identified all the molecular building blocks, the next frontier is now to understand how exactly they work together. In recent years, increasingly detailed maps of the molecular interactions that underlie all biological processes have become available. Network theory provides tools and concepts for reading these maps. In my presentation I will introduce the core ideas of network theory and highlight a number of applications in biology and medicine.
