Abstract:
In my defense I will present various results in combinatorial set theory constituting
my doctoral thesis. In particular, I will talk about applications of forcing to the study of partitions of Baire space into compact sets, cofinitary groups and Van Douwen families as well as their corresponding
cardinal characteristics and spectra.I will begin my presentation with a general introduction to the area of combinatorial set theory and briefly sketch the idea of the method of forcing.
