In the lecture we discuss numerical evaluation of definite integrals by the Newton-Cotesformulas. In
particular, we derive the method with a simple geometrical interpretation –the trapezoidal rule. Although the method was known and employed in Babylon before50 BC for integrating the velocity of Jupiter along the ecliptic, the trapezoidal rule is stillpopular and in use nowadays. By analyzing the error estimates we learn advantages ofthe method and the reason why it is considered as an optimal quadrature for integratingperiodic integrands over their periods.
