Abstract:
In this lecture, I will present the direct method of the calculus of variations and prove a general existence result for solutions of a large class of variational problems. I will then discuss an application to the Dirichlet energy and give examples that show that the assumptions of the existence theorem are
necessary.
Setting: This lecture would fit into the specialization module “Variationsrechnung” in the current curriculum of the Bachelor of Science program. I assume that the students are already familiar with one-dimensional Sobolev spaces from a previous lecture.
