Abstract:
In a spectacular series of papers, Deligne, Knudsen and Mumford proposed between 1970 and 1985 a compactification of the moduli space of genus g curves. Though technically quite exigent, their work changed the landscape of algebraic geometry dramatically, with a whealm of subsequent papers (hundreds alone on the arxiv). In the lecture, we give a down-to-earth construction of this compactification in the case of rational curves with n marked points, understandable also for the
non-expert, and based on the theory of phylogenetic trees.
The Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of n points on the projective line
