Approximating a function from data is a topic that arises in plenty of different mathematical contexts, and which is crucial in countless applications. It has a long history but it is the subject of very vibrant, modern research. In this teaching sample, I will propose an introduction to the topic through polynomial interpolation and least squares. The presentation is oriented for 2nd or 3rd year bachelor students who are familiar with basic concepts of analysis and linear algebra which are usually studied in the 1st year.
