Abstract: I will discuss some puzzling findings from our analysis of parametric regions for bistability in multisite modification systems (Nam et al, PLoS Comput Biol 16:e1007573 2020), which remain unexplained and poorly understood. The findings suggest that parametric regions can have macroscopic shape properties, such as volume, that seem to behave reasonably as conserved quantities are changed but this is not matched at the level of individual parameter points, which can exhibit surprisingly complicated behaviours.
