Our aim is to obtain precise information on the discrete spectrum of transfer operators
associated to various dynamical systems. I'll discuss the general principle that has come
to light in recent years and which often allows us to obtain substantial spectral
information. I'll then describe several settings where this approach applies, including
affine expanding Markov maps, monotone maps, hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
