Abstract: The quadric cone, as well as the five regular solids, are among the most-studied objects in mathematics, their history going back (at least) to the ancient Greeks. I will explain what links these classical constructions to more recent themes, such as the combinatorics of coloured partitions and representations of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Our recent results rely in particular on crystal bases, a combinatorial structure present within representations of (quantum) Lie algebras. Many interesting challenges remain open.
