This talk is an introduction to double affine Hecke algebras (DAHA).
I will explain the construction of the DAHA associated to a given root system and the degeneration procedure which produces the corresponding rational and trigonometric DAHA.
In the remaining part of the seminar I will present some of the applications of these algebras and their curious connections to other fields of Mathematics.
