Can you tell a ball from a doughnut by counting? A. Weil discovered in the 1940's that the geometry of a complex algebraic variety reflected in a precise way on its versions over finite fields. In this talk we will discuss the interaction between complex geometry and finite field geometry. This interaction between the continuous and the discrete has been a very fruitful two-way street that allows the transfer of important results from one context to the other.
