An introduction to infectious disease models

18.03.2022 14:00 - 14:30

Angelika Manhart (University College London)

Abstract: In this teaching demonstration I will discuss how to use compartmental models to describe infectious diseases and how this is relevant to modelling Covid-19. I will start with the famous SIR-model and how to use phase-plane analysis to understand the described disease dynamics. An emphasis will be put on the basic reproduction number, a key descriptor of infectious diseases. Finally, I will discuss how to extend the SIR-model and how to determine the basic reproduction number for more complicated models.
