Almost inner derivations of Lie algebras have their origin in almost inner automorphism of Lie groups. Both concepts present generalizations of the well-known inner derivations of Lie algebras and inner automorphisms of Lie groups respectively. Gordon and Wilson introduced them yearning for an answer to a classical question, which goes back to Hermann Weyl: what geometric properties may be deduced from the Eigenvectors of the Laplace-Beltrami Operator?
