This talk is meant to serve as an introduction to the compactification problem for moduli spaces. After presenting the basic ideas, we will focus on the case of the moduli space of cubic surfaces. We will review some classical approaches to its compactification and conclude by revisiting them in light of recent developments in moduli theory. The original results are joint works with Patricio Gallardo - Matt Kerr and Hanlong Fang - Xian Wu.
