Abstract: One approach to probing aspects of quantum gravity is to consider quantum field theory on a fixed curved background, neglecting backreaction effects. This framework has led to the discovery of various phenomena, most notably the Hawking radiation. In this talk, we will take a look at gravitational shockwaves, or more precisely, impulsive gravitational waves, and their effects on a quantum field. Specifically, we will examine whether such gravitational waves leave detectable imprints on the vacuum as seen by a quantum detector.
