On some set theoretic aspects of the geometric continuum

The notion of a cardinal characteristic of the continuum has emerged with the development
of analysis already in the late 19th century. The study of the relevant infinitary combinatorial
properties of the real line,  on one side reveals unexpected connections between its algebraic
and topological properties. On the other side, it brings to light many questions which are central
to the foundations of mathematics and in particular its axiomatization.

In the talk, I will try to explain some of the central ideas underling the subject of cardinal
characteristics of the continuum and point out towards some of its most interesting open problems.
