Often in Mathematics one has to work very hard to prove theorems and, being lucky, one encounters complicated proofs which require also a lot of efforts from their readers. It is a rare success to find a cleaver and short proof of a remarkable mathematical statement. Let us call mathematical haikus those precious gifts from the Muses, of which most of us surely treasure several examples. In this colloquium I will present one of my favorites: it is concerned with the fractional powers of the Laplacian and play an important role in the evolution of fluid interphases and atmospheric fronts.
