Abstract: In this lecture, we introduce the notions of local (and global) minima (resp. maxima), saddle points and critical points. We show that any extremum that is in the interior of the domain is in fact a critical point but that the converse is not true in general. We also introduce some tests that can be used to classify the behavior of any function at its critical points.
