The anisotropic evolution of particles on a substrate, i.e. with direction-dependent interfacial energy, is a common phenomenon in applied sciences, appearing for example in cell biology or in the study of polycrystals. We present a model for such dynamics where, in addition to the anisotropy, we also consider a space-dependent interfacial energy of the substrate, corresponding to a chemically patterned surface. Then, recalling the MBO scheme for mean curvature flow, we show an approximation result for the energy of the system by means of -convergence.
