Abstract: We describe rather explicitly a normal crossings compactification of the complex 4-dimensional character variety of rank 2 local systems on P^1 minus 5 points with prescribed monodromy. By looking at the components that occur and their arrangement, we can see many features of the Hitchin fibration on the moduli space of Higgs bundles. We'll also discuss some possible relationships with WKB theory and wallcrossing.
