Congratulations to our colleagues Markus Faulhuber and Paolo Piovano, who have each been awarded a 1000 Ideen Programm grant by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)

Paolo is an expert in the calculus of variations, with special focus on applications in materials science. Paolo has been a member of our faculty since September 2013, first as assistant in the Applied Mathematics and Modeling group and then as a Principal Investigator of his own WWTF Mathematik und... project Modeling and design of epitaxially strained nanoislands and his FWF standalone project Optimale Formen von Kristallgrenzen.

Paolo's 1000 Ideen Programm project is entitled Mathematische Modellierung der Knochenregenation.

Markus is an expert on time-frequency analysis and theta functions. He graduated from our faculty with a thesis on time-frequency analysis in 2017, for which he received a Doc Award from the City of Vienna. Markus has since been awarded a prestigious FWF Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship Eine “Weltkonstante” in der Zeit-Frequenz Analyse as well as an FWF standalone project Innerhalb des Framesets

Markus’ 1000 Ideen Programm project is entitled Universelle Optimalität des hexagonalen Gitters.

We are very excited for you both, Markus and Paolo!
