On 20 April, a seven-member team from our faculty, comprising Martin Bierbaumer, David Buchmaier, Dominik Pultar, Nik Sauer, Pavlo Sheket, Jan Strehn and Georg Weisbier, accompanied by Leonhard Summerer as team leader, travelled to Ostrava for the prestigious International Vojtech Jarnik Mathematics Competition.
Around 100 participants from 12 countries competed there in two categories (I: 1st–4th semesters, II: 5th–10th semesters), each tackling four challenging problems selected by the jury, with a total of four hours allowed to complete them. After a lengthy marking process by the jury and various interventions by the team leaders, the final results were finally announced:
All our participants performed exceptionally well, led by Jan Strehn, who won the Category I competition (jointly with a student from Berlin). This is the first time in more than twelve years that a student from the University of Vienna has achieved this! In the Category II competition, Martin Bierbaumer also achieved an outstanding result, finishing in 4th place. The detailed list of results and all the problems, including solutions, can be found at https://vjimc.osu.cz/j33results.
Dean Radu Bot and the entire Faculty of Mathematics warmly congratulate all participants on this outstanding success!
